The City of Arlington, VA actively looks for ways to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety. In March 2019, the City installed DEZIGNLINE’s modular BIKERAIL® system to create a physically separated bike lane at Eads & 22nd Streets. In March 2020, RAILRIBBON™ elements were added to further enhance the system’s visibility and aesthetics.
Like cities across the U.S. – and across the globe – Arlington recognizes that physical infrastructure separating people from vehicular traffic creates safer, more comfortable travel conditions for people who bike, walk and use scooters.
BIKERAIL is a strong, robust steel rail system that functions much like a concrete curb by nudging distracted drivers back into their traffic lane when they veer too close to the bike lane. Because no excavation is required, BIKERAIL can be installed very quickly without closing streets, re-routing traffic or impacting utilities. It can also be removed quickly, so it’s an ideal permanent or temporary separation treatment. RAILRIBBON elements heighten the system’s visibility and add a dynamic, whimsical “street art” touch, softening the hard edge of the urban landscape.
